If you, like me, are rather keen on the idea of jumping on a long-haul flight to Japan but don’t boast a bank balance or an annual leave allowance that’s quite as on board with the prospect, then listen up. For one weekend a month, a trusty trip on the tube will suffice when it comes to being transported to Tokyo – because Coal Drops Yard transforms into a bustling shōtengai street market, bringing the sights, sounds, and smells of Japan straight to the streets of London.
On the third weekend of every month, this cobbled corner of King’s Cross is filled to the brim with a carefully curated selection of independent businesses and family-run market stalls, serving up everything from food and fashion to textiles and trinkets. Paying homage to the vibrant shōtengais that can frequently be found over in the Land of the Rising Sun, mooching around Coal Drops Yard’s shōtengai pan-Asian Market is about as close as you’ll get to experiencing the tastes and traditions of Japan without leaving Zone 1.

The shōtengai at Coal Drops Yard has been co-curated by Beans & Co and brings together some of the very best London-based pan-Asian traders. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift, something gorgeous to decorate your home with, or something delicious to sink your teeth into; you’re sure to find it here.
The vendors are ever-changing and so it’s difficult to give you the specifics of what you can expect to find each month – but that’s probably one of the best things about it. You could visit the shōtengai every month, and still experience something new each time you go. The next shōtengai is taking place from October 15 to October 18, and you certainly won’t want to mis(o) it.
The next shōtengai market will set up shop on Lower Stable Street from October 15 – October 18. It will be open from 12pm to 7pm on the Thursday and the Friday, and from 11am to 6pm on the Saturday and the Sunday. You can find out more and plan your visit here.
