A major power cut has plunged thousands of homes and businesses across central and east London into darkness this morning after a fault on an underground electricity cable.
UK Power Networks confirmed the outage began at around 10.30am on Monday, October 5, affecting offices in the City of London and residential areas across 32 postcode districts. The operator said engineers were working to restore supplies, with power expected to return between midday and 1pm.
The blackout hit shortly after 10.30am, casting office blocks, shops and homes into darkness across a wide area spanning from the City through Hackney, Islington and parts of west London.
UK Power Networks said the disruption was caused by a fault on an underground electricity cable, forcing an unplanned cut to supplies while crews investigated and carried out repairs.
The company estimated that thousands of buildings were impacted, though it did not give a precise customer count in its initial update.
