From the outside, 261 Brixton Road looks like a classic London pub. That’s because, for most of its life, it was one. Long before it became Brixton Jamm, the building was the White Horse, later Ye Olde White Horse, a coaching inn that appears on a route map as far back as 1790. Tonight, Friday 2 October, it’s hosting something a little different: An Idiot’s Guide to Wine — an ideal last-minute plan in London to kick-start the weekend with a pourfect mix of comedy and wine.

Brixton Jamm
Created by Australian comedian Merrick Watts, An Idiot’s Guide to Wine is a comedy-led tasting designed to make wine less intimidating and far more entertaining. Expect good bottles, questionable wine knowledge and plenty of laughs.
The idea is simple. You taste a selection of wines while a comedian walks you through them, with no snobbery and no expectation that you know your Malbec from your Merlot. It’s a wine tasting for people who usually skip wine tastings, and a comedy night for people who’d rather have a glass in hand.
There are two sessions tonight in London, at 6pm and 8:30pm, with more dates coming on November 27 and December 4.
A 230-year-old coaching inn turned music venue feels like the right place for it. Brixton has always been good at taking old buildings and giving them a new life, and this is a relaxed way to see one of its best-known rooms without needing to stay up until 4am.

Brixton Jamm: a south London hotspot
It became Bar Lorca around the turn of the millennium, then Jamm by 2005, and it has since built a reputation as one of south London’s best small music venues. The venue says it hosted the first-ever live gigs of Adele and Florence and the Machine, and it’s still a regular after-party spot for shows at Brixton Academy around the corner.
How to get there
The simplest route is usually to take the Victoria line to Brixton Underground station, then walk roughly 5–10 minutes along Brixton Road towards Stockwell.
