Despite summer currently making a rather feeble attempt at a last-minute resurgence, I think it’s safe to say that autumn has officially clambered its way on to the horizon. And with the return of the cosy season comes the annual search for the snuggliest spots in the city to hibernate with a hot chocolate. So, I thought I would take it upon myself to point you in the dreamy direction of Highgate Woods – because not only will this ancient spot soon be home to some of the crispest, crunchiest leaves in town; it also boasts what might just be the cosiest cafe in the capital.
Queen’s Wood Cafe is picturesquely perched in the middle of Highgate Woods, looking like its leapt both from the pages of a storybook and the set of Gilmore Girls in equal measure. The cafe and its community garden are dedicated to the ‘preservation and enhancement of the local environment’, meaning that paying them a visit is as good for your conscience as it is for your taste buds (and your cameral roll).
The cabin was originally built as the wood keeper’s lodge back in 1898, but following years of neglect, was left completely derelict a century later. The site was at high risk of being demolished when Wanjiku Kamau and Murray Shelmerdine stepped in to save the day. They set up an eco-project in a bid to preserve and carefully restore the building and its gardens (which at that point were merely a tangle of weeds and nettles). The gardens were completely transformed, the lodge was turned into a cosy cafe, and – well… the rest is history, really.
Nowadays, Queen’s Wood Cafe serves as a wholesome haven in the heart of London, serving up an atmosphere as delicious as the food and drink itself. There’s a menu full of pastries, sandwiches, and sweet treats – many of which are made using organic, seasonal produce from the community garden (which is maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers).

The cafe offers a varied programme of cultural events, featuring everything from live music, poetry, and therapeutic experiences to meditation, yoga, and forest bathing. You can also hire the space for parties and private functions.
It really is the epitome of a hidden gem, offering a scenic sanctuary that’ll have you forgetting your mere moments away from the centre of the city within minutes. So, if you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise old slice of cake and a cuppa at the Queen’s Wood Cafe. And we’d highly recommend…
