Registos obscuros e definições variadas significam que não existe um verdadeiro consenso sobre a questão crucial: qual é o pub mais antigo do Reino Unido? No entanto, todos os pubs que se seguem apresentam um caso convincente, com grandes histórias para além disso. Então, continue lendo e aprenda sobre os grandes bares do país.
1. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham

O Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem fez uma aposta ousada para obter o título de pub (ou estalagem) mais antigo do Reino Unido, espalhando a honra de forma proeminente no exterior do pub. Apesar disso, não parece haver quaisquer registos que sustentem a afirmação. O pub faz parte da cidade, tendo sido construído nas mesmas rochas sobre as quais se ergue o Castelo de Nottingham, e o nome indica que talvez tenha sido uma paragem na peregrinação a Jerusalém.
No interior, pode sentar-se e beber em grutas que foram esculpidas na rocha e observar curiosidades. Entre as curiosidades, há um navio amaldiçoado que mata qualquer pessoa que o limpe e uma cadeira que, segundo se diz, aumenta as hipóteses de engravidar. 2. O Estandarte Real de Inglaterra, Beaconsfield

Vamos colocar o nosso peso no ringue e dizer que achamos que este é o pub mais provável de ser o mais antigo do Reino Unido. A verdade é, naturalmente, um pouco mais complicada, com fantasmas, reis e salteadores de estrada a desempenharem um papel (a história completa é um motim e pode ser encontrada no sítio Web do pub).
O essencial da história é o seguinte: o pub estava listado como uma taberna chamada The Ship Inn e foi documentado como tal no Domesday Book em 1086. É o lar do fantasma de um rapaz irlandês de 12 anos, baterista da Guerra Civil. Viu Carlos I esconder-se num buraco de padre no telhado. E foi palco do entretenimento das amantes de Carlos II, possivelmente em troca do novo nome, aprovado pela realeza, de The Royal Standard of England. Ah, e também fez uma aparição em Hot Fuzz (entre um número deslumbrante de outros filmes e programas de televisão). Por isso, no mínimo, tem muitas histórias para contar!
3. The Old Ferry Boat Inn, St Ives
Datas reivindicadas a partir de 560
Confusamente, este é o St Ives em Cambridgeshire, não o mais famoso na Cornualha. Além disso, o The Old Ferry Boat Inn tem uma forte reivindicação de ser o pub mais antigo do Reino Unido. Supostamente, o álcool tem sido servido neste local desde o ano 560. As fundações do pub remontam a 1400, mas também é mencionado no Domesday Book. Tal como o The Royal Standard, há um fantasma residente: este chama-se Juliet. Diz-se que é o espírito de uma mulher que se suicidou depois de ter sido abandonada pelo seu amante em 1050. O pub foi então, de forma pouco simpática, construído sobre a sua sepultura. Presumivelmente, é por isso que ela continua a assombrá-lo até aos dias de hoje.
4. The Porch House, Stow-on-the-Wold

Um lugar bucólico e bonito como Cotswolds precisa de um pub bonito para combinar, e The Porch House dá o toque certo. Como um dos pubs mais antigos do Reino Unido, partes do edifício foram datadas por carbono até o ano de 947, mas não parece ter sido usado como pub até os anos 1700. A comida de pub, incluindo os muito apreciados assados de domingo, faz parte do encanto atual, e está bem posicionado para ir até às deslumbrantes aldeias vizinhas de Broadway e Bourton-on-the-Water depois de uma cerveja restauradora.
5. The Bingley Arms, Bardsey

Um homem chamado Samson Ellis estava alegadamente a fazer cerveja neste local em 953! Hoje em dia, as cervejas tendem a vir de cervejarias mais modernas, mas o The Bingley Arms – localizado ao norte de Leeds – ainda possui uma rica história. Outrora conhecida como The Priest’s Inn, situava-se numa rota bem percorrida de Kirkstall Abbey para York e tem dois buracos de padre que podem ter escondido católicos durante o século XVI. Como é o caso de muitos dos pubs mais antigos do Reino Unido, é alegadamente o lar de três fantasmas, incluindo um cão fantasma que tenho a certeza que ainda é um Very Good Boy.
6. Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, St Albans
Datas reivindicadas desde 793
Na batalha dos pubs mais antigos do Reino Unido, este lugar tem o Guinness Book of World Records do seu lado. Isso deve-se ao facto de as fundações do pub terem feito parte do palácio de Offa, rei dos Mercianos (famoso por Offa’s Dyke), e terem sido construídas em 793. Como ele já não está por perto para perguntar, confiamos nos registos históricos, que indicam que o atual edifício foi construído no século XI – o que sabemos é que o pub tem o seu nome desde, pelo menos, 1872.

A sua biografia no Twitter orgulha-se de dizer que a primeira cerveja foi servida aqui no século XI, e o seu nome é mencionado numa carta de 1251. A sua biografia no Instagram chega mesmo a afirmar que é a casa de sidra mais antiga (embora se classifique apenas como o quarto pub mais antigo do Reino Unido). No entanto, o que torna este lugar realmente fascinante é o fantasma, que se diz ser o espírito de James Stanley, conde de Derby, que foi executado fora do pub em 1651.
A longa história do Ye Olde Man & Scythe, manchada de sangue, não pára por aí, no entanto, e há uma suposta 25 espíritos – pelo menos! – a assombrar o local. E não estamos a falar da sua seleção de whisky e gin…
8. A Pousada da Montanha Skirrid, Abergavenny

Como o único lugar galês nesta lista, sentimo-nos bastante seguros ao atribuir o título de pub mais antigo do País de Gales ao The Skirrid Mountain Inn. Parabéns! O pub tem o nome de uma montanha próxima, The Skirrid, e afirma ter inspirado Shakespeare e ter sido o ponto de encontro das tropas de Owain Glyndŵr durante a sua guerra contra os ingleses. Aparentemente, existe uma estalagem licenciada neste local desde 1110, mas o edifício atual data do século XVII. Há rumores de que a antiga viga de carvalho por cima do bar foi usada para enforcar aqueles que participaram na Rebelião de Monmouth contra James II.
9. The George Inn, Norton St Philip
Datas reivindicadas desde 1397.
Por estranho que pareça, o nosso próximo pub também foi usado como local de execução após a Rebelião de Monmouth, com doze pessoas executadas na aldeia comum. Como The George Inn tem aparentemente licença para servir bebidas alcoólicas desde 1397, talvez a perspetiva de uma boa cerveja espumosa depois de um longo dia de execuções tenha sido demasiado aliciante para deixar passar… Atualmente, o charme histórico, o excelente menu de comida e as salas acolhedoras fazem com que seja um dos favoritos dos habitantes locais.
10. The Clachan Inn, Drymen

Agora, dois pubs competem pelo título de pub mais antigo da Escócia. O primeiro é o The Clachan Inn. Situado a norte de Glasgow, o pub foi licenciado em 1734, o que faz dele uma das licenças mais antigas do Reino Unido. Diz-se que a mulher que obteve a licença para o pub, Mistress Gow, era a irmã do lendário fora da lei Rob Roy, e esta afirmação tem sido amplamente aceite como fazendo do The Clachan Inn o mais antigo da Escócia. 11. The Sheep Heid Inn, Edimburgo

Duas datas-chave dariam ao The Sheep Heid Inn a vantagem sobre o The Clachan. 1360 é o ano em que terá sido aberta uma estalagem neste local, o que faria deste o mais antigo estabelecimento público sobrevivente na Escócia. O registo mais antigo do nome “Sheep Heid Inn” data de 1710, o que, como se pode constatar, ainda é suficientemente antigo para ultrapassar o seu concorrente. Seja como for, este é um dos favoritos da realeza: Mary Queen of Scots era uma visitante conhecida, James I presenteou o proprietário com uma caixa de rapé como sinal do seu apreço e, em 2016, Elizabeth II passou por lá para uma visita. Talvez tenham sabido da pista de bowling do pub?
12. The Highway Inn, Burford

Outra beleza de Cotswold, o Burford Inn recebe hóspedes há mais de 500 anos e, durante esse tempo, já serviram muitas cervejas. Acomode-se junto a uma das lareiras crepitantes do pub e não poderá deixar de se sentir transportado para o passado. Um restaurante no local serve comida britânica saudável e os quartos confortáveis tornam-no numa opção atractiva para uma noite.
13. The Bell Inn, Nottingham
Datas reivindicadas desde 1437
Os registos mostram que The Bell Inn remonta a 1437. Mas, não contentes com quase 600 anos de história, os proprietários falam de uma cervejaria no local já no século XII. Até ao século XVI, a estalagem do sino foi uma hospedaria de um convento. No entanto, quando Henrique VIII fez uma pausa nos festejos e na procriação para dissolver os mosteiros, tornou-se uma cervejaria para nós, pagãos. Os desenvolvimentos mais modernos (não ditados por decreto real) viram um bar de gin instalado no andar de cima, enquanto outro dos pubs mais antigos do Reino Unido acompanha os tempos.
14. Adam & Eve, Norwich
Datas reivindicadas desde 1249
Diz-se que os primeiros clientes da taberna Adam & Eve eram trabalhadores que estavam a construir a vizinha Norwich Cathedral. De facto, os registos indicam que pode ter existido uma taberna neste local desde 1249. Nessa altura, poderá ter sido uma fábrica de cerveja gerida por monges beneditinos. O pub pode parecer bonito do lado de fora, mas escondeu alguns segredos macabros no seu tempo.Na década de 1970, os restos mortais de um monge foram encontrados durante as escavações da cave e o seu fantasma ainda hoje assombra o bar.
15. Ye Olde Salutation Inn, Nottingham

Há algo sobre Nottingham e os pubs mais antigos do Reino Unido, não é? O Ye Olde Salutation Inn é o terceiro bar da cidade a reivindicar o título de pub mais antigo do país. E tem uma reivindicação bastante forte, embora sob uma variedade de formas. O nome original, “Angel Gabriel Saluting the Blessed Virgin Mary”, provou ser um pouco complicado. Depois, passou um breve período como “O Soldado e Cidadão sob Cromwell”, antes de adotar o nome atual.
Pensa-se que as cavernas por baixo do edifício são provenientes de uma quinta saxónica do século IX e, embora seja definitivamente um pub para os aficionados da história, há outro grupo que o frequentará frequentemente. O “Sal” é, na verdade, um dos melhores locais de música ao vivo de Nottingham, com um forte enfoque no metal e no rock. O que diria Cromwell?
