I seem to have blinked and completely missed the final quarter of the year. But nonetheless, the festive season is well-and-truly upon us – and across the city, the sounds of jingly bells, Christmassy carols, and exhausted Londoners dragging themselves to the finish line fill the air.
If you’re in need of a merry little staycay this winter (and, I mean, who isn’t?); you’ve come to the right place, my friends. Because the travel connoisseurs over at Confused.com have just revealed the best and brightest spots in the world of festive staycations. And we’re oh-so delighted to tell you that the town that’s topped the charts is less than an hour from the capital city.
Based on factors including the amount of things to do and the number of places to eat, drink, and be merry; the historic town of Windsor has taken the (rather fitting) crown. They completely sleigh-ed the competition, boasting a whopping 169 things to do and a very impressive festive activity offering, too. With 198 restaurants, 48 pubs and bars, 62 hotels, and a fairly famous castle; if you’re in the market for a seasonal staycay – look no further, folks.
A joyful little jaunt to Windsor could include a trip to the royally ravishing Windsor Castle (more on that later), a wander through Windsor Great Park (which has been transformed into a magical light trail), or even a festive visit to Lapland UK (which is just a handy 15 minute drive away). What more could you want from a cosy Christmas staycation?
Christmas at Windsor Castle
The halls have been decked inside Windsor Castle (the world’s oldest and largest occupied castle, FYI), and the magnificent displays in the castle’s State Apartments feature a whole lot of red and gold. But would we expect anything less?
For the very first time, teeny tiny decorations have also been added to the legendary Queen Mary’s Doll’s House to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the largest doll’s house in the world. It looks utterly adorable and is truly fit for a (very small) King.
Getting to Windsor from London
Windsor is approximately a 50 minute drive from central London, with plenty of parking available near the centre. Non-drivers need not panic, though, as the train is just as speedy, with Windsor & Eton Riverside station being a quick and direct journey from London Waterloo. So, what are you waiting for? Let the cosy town of Windsor wrap you in a big warm hug this festive season. Go on, you deserve it.
