Very few things make Christmas feel as, well… Christmassy as a gorgeous dusting of snow, right? And despite London’s rather feeble track record when it comes to snow; year after year, we Londoners continue to (somewhat delusionally) dream of waking up on Christmas morning to discover a festive flurry of flakes.
Now, I really don’t want to be a Grinch about it, but the chances of the capital city experiencing an actual white Christmas are pretty darn slim. But don’t lose hope just yet, folks. There are plenty of European cities that will almost definitely be experiencing a sprinkling of snow this Christmas. And some of them are ever so quick and affordable to get to from London. How brr-illiant?
So, where in Europe can you enjoy a white Christmas this year? Well, global travel booking platform, Omio, have taken it upon themselves to find out for us. They waded through AccuWeather‘s data and crunched the numbers like freshly fallen snow beneath their feet to predict which European cities are most likely to experience a white Christmas this year. Here’s what they’ve predicted…
1. Vienna, Austria
The Austrian capital is fit for the front of a Christmas card, and is one of the European cities expected to experience some light sprinkles of snow throughout December. You can fly from London to Vienna in around two hours, for a little as £34. But if time is on your side, you could opt for the more economical coach, which takes around 30 hours. Admittedly, time would reaaally need to be on your side for that option.
2. Inverness, Scotland
Way up in the Scottish Highlands, Inverness provides the perfect festive backdrop for your seasonal shenanigans – and snow is currently forecast on various days throughout December. There are plenty of ways to get to Inverness from London. If you’re looking for the most affordable and sustainable route, you can hop on a (rather lengthy but ever-so scenic) coach for as little as £28. If you’re looking for a speedier option, flights to Inverness take under two hours, and also won’t break the bank.
3. Reykjavik, Iceland
Rather unsurprisingly, the capital of Iceland is set to be ever-so icy in the lead up to Christmas – and currently has snow forecasted for Christmas day itself. You can hop on a 3 hour flight to Reykjavik from London for as cheap and cheerful as £39. If that doesn’t get you in the festive spirit, I don’t know what will.
4. Oslo, Norway
Oslo is another European city set to be on the receiving end of a fair bit of snow this season. A flight to Oslo will take you around 2 hours from London and will only set you back around £50. Oslo boasts a rather impressive Christmas market, too. So, wrap up warm and live out your festive dreams, Londoners.
5. Helsinki, Finland
Last on the list, we have yet another Scandinavian capital set to see some snowy December days. This time it’s Helsinki in Finland. You can hop on a plane from London and be there in under 3 hours, with flights starting from as little as £53. Not bad, hey?
So, there you have it: some European cities, currently predicted to experience a white Christmas. But if you’re unable to take a trip to one of these snowy spots this festive season, fear not. White Christmases are snow-verrated, anyway…
