London is no stranger to the spotlight, and has had it’s gorgeous face splashed across the big screen many times. One of the most recent additions to London’s lengthy film CV is the new time-hopping, heart-wrenching, life-affirming romance flick, We Live in Time.
The eagerly-anticipated film hit cinemas on New Year’s Day, and follows the story of an ambitious chef, Almut (Florence Pugh), and a recently-divorced IT guy, Tobias (Andrew Garfield), as they navigate their life and love under the intensifying pressures of time. Spanning a decade of their lives, the majority of the movie is set in our very own capital city. And so, we thought we’d put together a list of all the filming locations that can be found in London. You’re very welcome.
Herne Hill Station
The South London suburb of Herne Hill plays a pretty pivotal role throughout the film, serving as the backdrop of the central characters’ life together. It’s the area in which they meet, live, and fall in love, and many scenes were filmed there. For example, on the night of Tobias and Almut’s first date, Tobias is seen strolling out of Herne Hill station. Director, John Crowley, deliberately chose to set a lot of the film in Herne Hill (an area of London that’s not considered to be particularly glamourous), as he wanted to ‘break out of the romantic genre’s usual conventions’.
Co-op, Bexley
Very early on in the movie, Tobias can be seen in the South London supermarket, wearing nothing but a hotel robe, in search of a pen to sign his divorce papers and a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. I can only imagine the looks on the faces of any locals that happened to be popping in for a quick food shop on that particular day.
Lulu’s, Herne Hill
After spending the night together for the first time, Almut and Tobias head to Lulu’s – a charming deli-by-day and wine bar-by-night – to pick up some breakfast supplies. In the following scene, Tobias can be seen carrying a Lulu’s tote bag. Yep, he’s definitely a Londoner.
Brockwell Park
With a coffee in a hand and a tote bag full of breakfast goodies in tow, Almut and Tobias can be seen wandering through Brockwell Park, an 125-acre green space near Brixton.
Texaco Petrol Station, Orpington
Certainly not the most romantic of spots, but this Orpington petrol station makes a rather crucial cameo in the movie, at a pretty life-changing moment. We’ll say no more…
Pizza Express, Lavender Hill
Apparently even a successful chef needs a Pizza Express doughball every once in a while. The Lavender Hill branch of the popular pizza chain is seen on screen when Almut, Tobias and their daughter Ella are having a meal there.
Bromfelde Road, Clapham
Last but not least, a residential road in Clapham is also featured in the film. Bromfelde Road is the street on which we see a rather flustered Tobias attempting to hurriedly manoeuvre his car out of a congested road.
So, there you have it, the London locations seen on the big screen in We Live in Time. If you fancy stepping into the shoes of Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, you now know where to head to. And if you’re planning on watching the film any time soon, don’t forget to take your tissues – you’ll most definitely be needing them.
‘We Live in Time’ can be seen in cinemas now.
