It’s no secret that we Secret London writers love our fair city. In fact, we quite honestly think we’re the best city in the UK – something we’re quite happy to debate with our pals from across the country. After all, in the past year we’ve been recognised as the best city in the UK for foodies, the top city for culture in the world, and the best place in the world to visit. But it got us thinking… What is the UK’s second best city? After all, we’re hardly trying to suggest we’re the only incredible destination. The UK is packed to the rafters (or borders, rather) with wonderful cities.
But, what’s the best way to answer the question? Well, we asked you! Over on our Instagram broadcast channel, we asked you: “if you had to choose the 2nd best city – where would it be?!” And boy did you all have some strong opinions! Almost 2,000 of you weighed in, but one city absolutely stormed the poll. Edinburgh was the clear runaway winner – with over 1,300 votes!
Enchanting Edinburgh
It’s no surprise to anyone who has visited Edinburgh (or those who live there!) that it fared so well in the poll. The hilly Scottish capital simply oozes charm. There’s something for any visitor, from impressive historic sites to literary hotspots, incredible food and drink, stunning nature scenes, and more. Heck, you can even climb an ancient volcano in the form of Arthur’s Seat! A Scottish town just outside of Edinburgh was even recognised recently as the best place to live in the UK.
All that to say – if you haven’t visited yet, what are you waiting for?!
In third place – according to the poll – was our friends over in Manchester with over 250 votes. A worthy showing, but it wasn’t even close! The rest of the poll results were:
- #3. Bristol (165 votes)
- #4. Glasgow (80 votes)
- #5. Birmingham (53 votes)
What do you think? Which city do you think should have been crowned the second best city in the UK?
