London Trans+ Pride is back. Started in 2019, after an anti-trans group stormed the 2018 Pride Parade, the march has grown from strength to strength. Established for all trans+ people to have an event where they could freely express themselves – the enthusiasm and drive of LTP has resonated with a population that hasn’t always felt represented at Pride events.
This year, London Trans+ Pride will set off at 1pm on Saturday, July 9, from Wellington Arch. It’s sure to be a day of joy. A day of celebration and pride – proudly existing and taking up space.
But the event is equally one of protest and demand: protesting inequality and discrimination; demanding justice and equal rights for trans+ people. It’s a day where Trans+ shows their stance, promoting gender liberation for all.
2022’s event is looking to be the biggest London Trans+ Pride yet. A successful crowdfunding campaign has allowed the organization to grow alongside the increased attendance and participation. In particular, funds will go towards stewards safe-guarding participants, transport cost for speakers, hydration stations, and accessibility. LTP builds their values into the event from the ground up, with accessibility, safety, and intersectionality carefully considered in the planning and implementation.
Participants are encouraged to “Wear flowers to honour the long legacy of transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming and intersex people who came before us.” It’s a tradition that started at the first London Trans+ Pride, and has found the event filling the streets with bright and beautiful colour.
Cis allies who would like to help as stewards, legal observers, or first-aiders can email transpridestewards@gmail.com to register interest.
