Picture the scene – you’re aboard the most famous ship in the world, the RMS Titanic, travelling in luxury. You’re sat in the first-class dining saloon, and you’re about to tuck into a scrumptious-looking afternoon tea. Surely not an experience you could ever recreate? Until now, that is, thanks to a brand-new Titanic-inspired afternoon tea that has just launched in London.
Now, I’m of course not suggesting that it’s possible to have afternoon tea onboard the Titanic. But you can do something pretty close… The Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel has just launched its new afternoon tea: The Tea Behind the Titanic. Guests can enjoy a specially 20th-century-inspired experience in a dining room that is said to be an exact replica of the Titanic’s first-class dining saloon.

The Titanic-inspired afternoon tea
If you’re after a slice of history, then look no further than this new Titanic-inspired experience. Within the hotel’s Fitz’s Brasserie, guests can tuck into an afternoon tea “inspired by the grandeur and glamour of the early 20th century.”
Now, that’s not to say that guests will be chowing down on Titanic-shaped scones or iceberg-inspired pastries. Instead, they’ve drawn inspiration from the architecture, history, and glamour that unite the hotel and the doomed ship. “The menu draws from the grandeur of early 20th-century first-class dining, pairing elegant pastries influenced by both Fitz’s Brasserie and the RMS Titanic, taking inspiration from the Edwardian era with a contemporary twist.”

Bites on offer include everything from Waldorf pudding scones inspired by the ship’s famous 10-course dinner to a chocolate éclair named after the Titanic’s D-Deck. Naturally, there are also a variety of afternoon tea sandwiches. And, of course, there are scones (Irish buttermilk scones!) served with Cornish clotted cream and marmalade. Sweets range across macarons, mousse cakes, and the already-mentioned ‘D-Deck’ Éclair.
The Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel
But you may be wondering – why does the Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel have a replica of a dining room from the Titanic? Did David Cameron invest in the hotel or something? Is it some sort of recent addition? Well, it actually predates the Titanic itself!
Over 100 years ago, in 1898, architect Charles Fitzroy Doll designed the palatial Hotel Russell. Drawing influence from Paris, he created a truly stunning, ornate hotel. That hotel went on to become the Kimpton Fitzroy London in 2018, operating in the same venue just with a different name.

But the hotel shares a unique connection to another of the era’s examples of opulence and decadence. Following his work on the hotel, Charles also designed the first-class dining saloon aboard the RMS Titanic. He drew considerable inspiration from the hotel for the design. In fact, it’s said that the hotel’s Fitz’s Brasserie is an exact replica of that dining room. That’s right, when you dine in Fitz’s Brasserie, you’re dining in the same environs as the hoity-toity did during the golden age of ocean travel.
