The glorious falafel – a dish that just keeps on giving to the street food world. And now the street food world is showing its appreciation, for next month the first ever falafel festival comes to Borough Market. Apparently 2016 is the Year of the Pulses and what better to celebrate multiple pulses at once (these being dried beans, dried peas, lentil and of course the cheeky chickpea) than in the form of the falafel.
[Hoxton Beach]On 1st May there will be four chefs competing for the Golden Falafel Award (yes, there is such thing). Chef Mustafa Elrefaey will be flying in from Cairo to prepare his traditional Egyptian falafel for the occasion, while Hadi Hazim will be bringing his black eyed bean falafel all the way from Beirut. London stall Pilpel’s Uri Dinay will be showcasing his acclaimed spiced chickpea falafel sandwich. Also from London, Louai Fares and Rasheed Muhammed from street food champions Hoxton Beach will be bringing their 50-50 blend falafel of fava beans and chickpeas to the table.
