There might not be a more January-coded activity than yoga, but you won’t necessarily get many chances to take it up alongside the paintings at a historic art gallery.
Tate Britain is hosting yoga classes all throughout this week for those who wish to reap the benefits of the practice and gaze at the world-famous paintings sat in one of London’s oldest art galleries.

Tate has joined forces with MoreYoga as part of their wellness week, running yoga classes for members of the free Tate Collective – their scheme for 16-25 year olds, which offers plenty of free events and discounted tickets to exhibitions for young art lovers. Sessions will be available in both the morning and evening throughout this week.
As you step into the room, you may but wonder what John Singer Sargent’s favourite pose was, or whether JMW Turner enjoyed stances and breathwork between brushstrokes. Maybe your mat will even be placed beside their paintings. Wherever you find yourself, you’ll be surrounded by historic pieces of culture to add a different dimension to your usual yoga routine.
The morning classes run from 8:40am to 9:30am on Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday, with the aim to set each attendee up with energy for the day ahead, while the evening classes at 6:30pm to 7:30pm on Tuesday & Thursday focus on ‘release and reflect’ with restorative posture and breathwork. Better still, those who join a yoga class through Tate Collective can also claim a free hot drink after the session.
Yoga sessions are taking place at Tate Britain from Monday, January 19 to Friday, January 24, with both morning and evening classes taking place. Find out more and book your spot for the Tate wellness week activities here.
