Last year, it was announced (to much excitement) that Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away was headed to London’s West End, with a limited 12-week run at the London Coliseum. It didn’t take long, however, for demand to see that 12-week run extended by an extra five weeks, which will see it run all the way up to August 24, 2024. And the best part – it has finally opened on stage! (And tickets are still available!)
Reimagined for the stage by Toho Theatrical Department and Olivier and Tony Award-winning director John Caird, (who you might know from a small production called Les Misérables), the European premiere of the show features the original Japanese cast from its sell-out tour in 2022.
Hosted at the largest theatre in London’s West End, the production is performed in Japanese with English captions. To add a sense of magic to the whole affair, it features the film’s spectacular original score played by a live orchestra.
Hayao Miyazaki’s film was a blockbusting hit after its release in 2001, winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. The story follows a young Chihiro who is travelling to a new home with her family when she stumbles across a curious world overrun by peculiar spirits. She is put to work in a bathhouse where she must keep her wits about her in order to survive this mysterious place and free her parents, who have been turned into pigs.
Spirited Away is now running at the London Coliseum between April 30 – August 24, 2024. Tickets are still available (but are limited!), and can be booked here. There are even tickets available for less than £30 – though naturally, the price will vary depending on the type of seat you pick.
Act fast – you don’t want to miss this stunning production.
