Hot on the heels of Waterloo East and Charing Cross stations reopening their doors following a 22-day summer closure, another south London station has decided to jump on the bandwagon. Transport for London has recently announced that Southwark underground station on the Jubilee line will be completely closed for several hours a day on weekdays throughout the remainder of the summer.
When will Southwark station be closed?
Southwark station will shut up shop during weekday daytimes from now until September 11. Jubilee line services will not be stopping at the south London station between the hours of 9.45am and 4.15pm on Mondays to Fridays. The station will operate as normal before and after these times, and will also be open as usual on the weekends.
Why is Southwark station closing?
The three-and-a-bit week disruption is due to extensive construction work taking place as part of the the Southwark Over Station Development. This rather hefty project will see two mixed-use towers built above Southwark station. The new buildings on the block will boast student accommodation, affordable housing, a retail and cafe space, and a shared community garden.
Passengers have been advised to use Waterloo or Blackfriars stations to complete their journeys during the affected times and dates. Waterloo is roughly an 8-10 minute walk from Southwark and offers access to the Jubilee Line, whilst Blackfriars is linked to the Southwark area via the 40 or 63 bus routes.
