Summer is in full bloom, and London is looking bloomin’ gorgeous because of it! One of the best ways to celebrate this (questionably brief) return of some well-earned vibrancy is by checking out the fantastic gardens and botanical-based attractions in and around the city. Beyond the big names and capital icons dotted all around London, venture further out and you’ll find even more beautiful gems to explore.
Take the picturesque RHS Garden Wisley, a horticultural haven nestled in the picturesque Surrey countryside that’s, quite simply, yearning for exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned garden expert or are looking for a serene escape away from the hustle and bustle of capital life, this beautiful hotspot promises a memorable experience where you’re completely immersed in the beauty and tranquillity of nature.
A floral wonderland in the heart of Surrey
RHS Garden Wisley has a storied past that dates back to 1878, boasting several significant developments that helped it evolve into the gorgeous garden it is today. Its foundational vision was to create a garden where experimental planting could not only develop but thrive, and after a couple of private owners, Garden Wisley eventually fell into the hands of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
There are so many fantastic things to do, with amazing attractions and displays throughout, as well as an unmissable roster of events all year long. From the world-renowned Glasshouse to a fantastic Rock Garden, summer activities to a winter lights show, it’s always worth checking out what’s on at Wisley since there’s truly something for everyone.
Something to delight every single visitor…
It’s time to break down some of the said ‘fantastic things to do’. We’ve already mentioned their remarkable Greenhouse, spanning an impressive size that’s equivalent to ten tennis courts. It houses three distinct climatic zones: tropical, moist temperate, and dry temperate. Wander through lush rainforest, vibrant orchids, and an arid desert landscape without taking one step outside of Surrey.
We also recommend checking out the Wisley’s Model Gardens, which are great if you’ve got green thumbs yourself. They are a treasure trove of inspiration for home gardeners, boasting everything and anything from small urban gardens to traditional cottage-core spaces, there are countless ideas and inspirational corners to take away and adapt for your own green space.
The Oakwood is another attraction that’s well worth exploring – formerly known as the Wild Garden – which is a dream-like trial with Wisley’s most diverse plant collection. It’s located in between the Rock Garden and their Seven Acres area, which is packed to the brim with wide open lawns, picture-perfect ponds, and fine specimen trees.
