Lockdown probably had must of us dreaming for brighter days, just that little something to be the rainbow to our ongoing storm. Except, clashing with the ideas of fellow-dreamer Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz, it was less “there’s no place like home”, and more “get me out, anywhere but home”. Now, restrictions have loosened a little, with outdoor socialising allowed once more. But that, of course means, most visits to art galleries are still on pause until mid-May, if we’re going by Boris Johnson’s roadmap. Fear not though, art enthusiasts, there are still some mesmerising outdoor installations for you to gawk at before then.
And this one right here, this rainbow-inspired beauty in Greenwich, is certain to give you one of those brighter days you dreamed of during the winter. While no pot of gold can be found here, this flamboyant installation is bound to have you feeling like a million dollars.
Brought to us by British artist Liz West, Hundreds And Thousands is a kaleidoscopic walkway brightening up The Tide on Greenwich Peninsula. It forms part of a series of spatial light works based on West’s research into wellbeing, human colour perception and light fields.

Anyone walking by the river, at any time of day, is sure to be bowled over by its vibrant presence. The striking, rainbow-themed glass along the walkway is 700m in length, and aims to transmit a symbol of hope with its luminous stripes that compliment gorgeous rhythmic patterns.
Speaking of her creation, Liz West said: “The experience of seeing my work as you move along and around The Tide gives visitors a multicoloured and rich visual experience that will hopefully trigger feelings of wellbeing and joy. Hundreds and Thousands unveils unexpected delights for the senses, much like encountering the overwhelming cacophony of colour and shapes when walking into a sweet shop; the multicoloured pattern never repeats itself; juicy reflections on nearby surfaces; a spectral sundial on a sunny day.”
Later in the year, Hundreds Of Thousands is also due to turn into both a catwalk–for women’s wear Kitty Joseph design on May 29– as well as a stage on May 30, for a unique dance performance from by Laura Amy White. Keep up to date with upcoming events at Hundreds And Thousands here.
