For most multi-day events, we’d opt to take you through the order of play in chronological order — but for Prince of Peckham’s 5th birthday week, I’ve decided to start on the final day’s activity. Why? Well, when something has the title of “Drag Baby Rave” it’s going to pique your interest.
Yes, you read it correctly: Drag. Baby. Rave. Taking place from 11am-2pm on the final day of festivities (May 22), CLIP Theatre are holding an event for those under-5, with a performance from their brilliant drag queens about a “little Prince trying to get home to the land of Peckham”. A show sure to please both babies and parents, live music, puppetry, singing and dancing can also be expected to make it the truly definitive Drag Baby Rave. (Get your tickets here).
Swivelling back to tomorrow (May 19), though, Prince Of Peckham will host a lively night of stand-up comedy from the likes of Karen Hobbs, Michael May, David Ajao and a headline performance from Dane Baptiste. Plus, the venue will enjoy a takeover from Brixton Tap, who will provide tasty beer and a barrage of games from Air Hockey to retro arcade.
Then, as you may expect, there’s a big shubz planned for Friday night, with BBC Radio 1Extra’s Manny Norte on hand to provide a party into the morning with Hip Hop, Afrobeats, Dancehall, Amapiano and plenty of other tunes soundtracking the occasion. Then, if your head isn’t too sore from the previous night, Saturday (May 21) marks five years of PoP with a night hosted by Capital XTRA’s Yinka Bokinni playing a special set of hip hop and R&B classics.
On Sunday (after the Drag Baby Rave, of course), the celebrations will close with the perfect choice of activity: Karaoke. It’s hosted by Capital XTRA’s Teeshow, and we suggest you warm up those vocal chords and head down to end Prince of Peckham’s birthday week in style. A fine selection of events, if you ask us. Many happy returns, PoP!
