Paul O’Grady broke into the world of showbiz as Lily Savage in the 1980s. gaining popularity in the 1990s. Ever since, he’s been a household name, with an roster of shows and wicked sense of humour.
It’s not known why the star passed but his husband, Andre Portasio, released a statement saying that he died “unexpectedly but peacefully”. He added:
“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion. […] I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
Paul O’Grady was born in Tranmere, Birkenhead which was then Cheshire and now Merseyside, in 1955. He was the son of Irish immigrants and would attend meetings for the Campaign for Homosexual Equality.
He has featured in tons of fantastic TV shows, including my personal favourite, Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs. Many of us will have grown up watching The Paul O’Grady Show and in fact, just last week he was performing as Miss Hannigan in Annie – a performance that one of our writers thoroughly enjoyed.
He will be sorely missed by both fans and celebrities alike. We’ll certainly miss that trademark smile on our screens. Rest in peace, Paul.
