As much as we crow and boast about our own Christmas markets here in London and the wider UK, it’s hard to deny the allure of mainland Europe’s festive markets. And one stunning example, which is entering its 30th year of operation this year, can be found in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. We’re talking, of course, about Paris and the La Défense Christmas Market.
Just a short journey away from London on the Eurostar, the La Défense Christmas Market is the largest Christmas market in the Île-de-France region. You’ll find it in the forecourt of the city’s La Défense, at the foot of the Grande Arche. The market spreads across a whopping 7,500 square metres and boasts a comparably impressive ice rink – a huge 540 square metre natural ice rink.

Wander around the market, and you’re sure to get overwhelmed with choice as you make your way past 300 snow-covered chalets. The smell of cinnamon and Christmas spices fills the air, and steaming cups of hot chocolate tempt from every corner. It’s a veritable culinary journey around France, Europe, and beyond, with stalls selling food with flavours from Quebec to Alsace, the Alps, and beyond.
But it’s more than just food. There is also an impressive array of traditional craft stands, perfect for buying unique gifts for that one friend who has everything. You know the type, the one you agonise over buying things for, until settling on a (frankly) disappointing gift card. Not to mention the Christmassy decor filling every square inch and covering every surface in the market.
Throughout the week, there are regular activity sessions for young children. These range from free creative workshops to face-painting and enchanting storybook readings. And right in the heart of the market, you’ll find Santa Claus himself, waiting to meet with visiting families.
