To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Old Marylebone Town Hall hosted 100 wedding ceremonies today Tuesday October 1st and for the cost of only £100. In a mass celebration to mark the special occasion, a hundred couples got married at the iconic venue where celebrity weddings including the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Ringo Starr and Liam Gallagher got married.
This landmark London wedding venue welcomes couples from 8:30am with the last ceremony expected to take place at 10:30pm. Couples are allowed to bring up to eight guests and a maximum of two pets. All 75 members of staff at the Old Marylebone Town Hall will have delivered seven ceremonies a hour for couples.
And while the pouring rain may have been inconvenient, the old saying goes that a wet wedding day is a sign of good luck.
The Grade II listed space has only once taken a hiatus of four years for a £60million facelift and expansion since its 1924 opening.
The venue has administered more celebrity nuptials than anywhere else in the UK – Ringo Starr marrying Barbara Bach, Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, Sean Bean and Georgina Sutcliffe and Cilla Black and Bobby Willis. Not to forget Sir Paul McCartney who liked it so much that he married his first wife Linda there in 1969 and then used the hall again in 2011 for his third wedding with Nancy Shevell.
According to the Standard, many of the couples have been known to share a deep connection to venue and the surrounding area of Westminster – whether through growing up there, living, working, or for some who began their relationships there.
On the official Westminster Council website, many anecdotes from couples can be found as to why they chose to marry at Old Marylebone Town Hall: “I used to work around Marylebone and walk past the town hall every week. Watching the couples walk down the iconic stairs and enjoying their happiest day, I said to myself that one day I’d like to get married there too. And I can’t believe that it’s going to happen soon, I’m so excited! It’s a dream come true.”
