Which supermarkets will be open on New Year’s Day?
It’s worth noting that supermarket opening times vary quite drastically across the UK, but these are the shops that are set to be open on the first day of the year.
Tesco
Most Tesco stores are set to be open from 9am to 6pm. Tesco Express stores, however, will open from 8am to 10pm.
Sainsbury’s
Larger Sainsbury’s stores will open from 8am to 8pm on New Year’s Day. The smaller local stores are set to open from 9am to 9pm.
ASDA
The majority of ASDA stores are set to be open from 9am to 7pm on New Year’s Day.
Co-op
Most Co-op stores will be open from 10am to 7pm on New Year’s Day, but their smaller convenience stores are set to open from 9am to 8pm.
Morrisons
Morrisons stores are set to be open from 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.
Lidl
Lidl stores inside the M25 will be open from 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.
Waitrose
Waitrose opening hours seem to vary across different locations, but many of their London stores look to be open from 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.
Which supermarkets will be closed on New Year’s Day?
Again, it’s certainly worth checking websites for details on specific shops. But for the most part, these are the supermarkets that don’t plan on opening their doors on January 1.
Lidl
Lidl stores outside of the M25 are set to be closed on New Year’s Day
Aldi
Aldi stores across the UK will also be closed on New Year’s Day.
M&S
M&S have announced that their stores will be closed on New Year’s Day.
Are there any other major shops that plan to close on New Year’s Day?
Whilst many shops will be operating with reduced hours on New Year’s Day (again, say it with me, folks – you’ll have to check your specific local stores to know for sure), some major shops have announced that they will be closed completely on January 1. These include:
