London is world-renowned for its art scene – and for good reason. Our city is filled to the brim with art galleries and museums, which in turn boast stunning exhibitions and showcases. And early next year, the art scene will receive yet another brilliant opening, as a breath-taking Monet exhibition lands at a leading London museum.
Opening in February of 2027, ‘Monet: Painting Time’ will be the Tate Modern’s first exhibition devoted to the beloved artist. And it’s set to be a truly magnificent collection of his works. The exhibition will feature “paintings from lenders across the globe, including rarely seen works from private collections.”
For many of the artworks, this exhibition could be your only chance to see them in person!
Monet: Painting Time
Exploring Monet’s relationship with time, particularly the rapidly industrialising world that was changing around him, ‘Monet: Painting Time’ is as much about contextualising the artist’s works as it is about displaying them.
As the pace of life quickened around him, we see Monet approaching time in different ways. Some of the works on display, such as Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare (1877), see him “capturing the fleeting, instantaneous ‘impressionist’ moment”. Meanwhile, the passage of time and the impermanency of the natural world are captured in series’ of paintings, as in Poplars on the Epte (1891–1897).

Then, as Monet retreats from the rapidly-changing world back into nature and his beloved garden in Giverny, we see time slow down. Paintings show the passage of time through months and years instead of fleeting seconds, minutes, and days. This leads to the creation of his iconic Water Lilies (or Nymphéas) cycle.
Regardless of whether you’re a huge Monet fan already or are only glancingly familiar with his works, Monet: Painting Time is a must-visit. It’s sure to be one of 2027’s most anticipated and popular exhibitions.
