One of the most common complaints about London’s food scene is the dearth of authentic Mexican food. But the reality is that there is a growing wave of incredible Mexican eateries all across our city. Heck, our city is even home to a Michelin-starred Mexican restaurant in the form of Marylebone’s Kol. Frustrated by the oft-repeated complaint, one Mexican restaurant owner has put together a list to highlight London’s wealth of delicious Mexican-owned restaurants, taquerias, and eateries.
A casual observer of London’s Mexican food scene might spot chain Tex-Mex establishments around our city and roll their eyes. But there is much more available for those willing to explore. In fact, one could argue (and I will) that some of the city’s most popular (and viral) establishments are incredible Mexican-owned restaurants. These include the likes of the queue-commanding Sonora Taqueria in Stoke Newington, Guacamoles in Peckham, and Proper Tacos in North London.
Mexican-owned restaurants in London
Even outside of the social-media-dominating spots, London is home to all sorts of Mexican-owned restaurants. Fortunately for fans of Mexican food, someone has already done the work and compiled a list of the best of the best – Mexican-approved. Teresa Lopez, of Proper Tacos, has put together a guide to the city’s best and most authentic spots.

This ain’t merely a list of restaurant names, either. The painstakingly researched directory also includes criteria such as ‘hand-made tortillas’, the average Google rating, and whether they’ve won awards. The kicker? Every single spot is Mexican-owned.
Some of our particular favourites on the list include:
- Proper Tacos
- Sonora Taqueria
- Corrochio’s
- Guacamoles
- Cavita
- Santo Remedio
- Homies On Donkeys
- Mestizo
- La Chingada
