Usually, if you went to see an event at Alexandra Palace that puts you to sleep, a middling to bad review would be in the post. At Max Richter’s SLEEP shows, though, it marks the sign of successful and tranquil completion.
SLEEP is an eight-hour concept album celebrating its 10th anniversary, with Richter’s sounds being heralded across two nights at Ally Pally, soothing tired attendees with an eight-hour lullaby running through the night into the early morning. Those attending the shows on September 5 & 6 are invited to the North London venue to crash over and enjoy a deep rest.

What exactly happens at Max Richter’s SLEEP concerts?
SLEEP has taken its lullaby to venues across the world, including the Great Wall Of China and Sydney Opera House. With next month’s show marking the first time SLEEP has been performed in London since 2017, this anniversary show will see the record performed in its entirety, the length of which is widely regarded to be the optimum amount of time for a kip.
Those purchasing a ticket are reminded that the price guarantees them a bed for the night, as opposed to a standing spot or seat that they might be accustomed to at a gig, with doors at 8pm and the show commencing at the reasonable bedtime hour of 10pm (last entry is 9:30pm). Part concert, part art installation, SLEEP runs until 6am the following morning, playing you the sounds based on the neuroscience of sleep and hopefully giving you an entire night of bliss.

There are changing facilities and bedding for everyone on site, so all you’ll need to bring is your comfiest clothes to sleep in and the desire to hit the hay after a long day. Every guest will also be given a light breakfast once the curtains are opened before heading back out into the world at 6am.
When else would you get a chance to enjoy at the same venue you’re used to watching your favourite acts? In September, the venue could put you to sleep and come November, you’ll be dancing in the same space to music from the likes of Turnstile, Four Tet, Blood Orange, and more. As Alex Turner once said: Get on your dancing shoes pyjamas. There’s only one thing on your mind. Yes, correct… SLEEP.
