Not content with five top-tier seasons, DCI John Luther is jumping into the feature-length settings for his latest outing. A first trailer for the Luther feature film, Luther: Fallen Sun, has been released, and it’s looking suitably stuffed with suspense and despair, just like the Luther we’ve always known.
If you’re wondering whether we need another gritty cop show in the dark underbelly of London. the answer is yes: always yes; you can never have too much of everyone’s favourite bitter, jaded cop.
As we know, Luther (Idris Elba) doesn’t exactly do things by the book; and proceedings are kicked off with the imprisoned detective doing a characteristically sound job of getting-the-hell-out-of-jail – let’s be honest who really thought he was going to stay put?
Equally, the man on the run–still managing to track down his trademark suit after a prison break–was never going to turn his back on what he knows, uttering the words: “I need to stop this man, I’m still a copper.”
Yup, he’s back — stalked by a murder, narrowly sidestepping a moving train, and surrounded by flames in every sense. It’s the first time Luther has hit our screens since a fifth season dropped in January 2019, and the trailer ends with the man uttering the words “I’m ready.”
But aside from us and Luther himself clearly desperate to get stuck into the action, there’s more returning and new characters that can be spotted in the trailer.
A new serial killer, played by Lord Of The Ring’s star Andy Serkis, is on the loose, and the trailer shows him to be just the suitably evil villain we’ve come to expect from the series.
Elsewhere, we expect the return of Dermot Rowley in the role of DSU Martin Schenk, as well as welcoming in new character Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo) to the unflinching action. There’s still no sign of a return of the inimitable and illusive Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) in the trailer, but we can’t quite rule anything in the world of Luther.
Luther: Fallen Sun hits selected cinemas on February 24, and Netflix on March 10.
