A recent study analysed the 50 biggest party cities in the UK to find out which of them is the best and – unfortunately for us – which of them is the worst for a night on the town. Several factors were examined, and numbers were crunched like that slightly sad piece of toast you scoff before going to bed after a night out to ‘soak up the alcohol’. Each city was then given an overall ‘party score’ to determine the results – and spoiler alert: London did absolutely terribly.
The results were based on factors such as the average price of a pint, the average hotel cost, and the number of pubs, bars and nightclubs per 10,000 residents in each city. And as much as this pains me to say: out of the 50 cities analysed, London came in at rock bottom, with a rather humbling score of just 5 out of 10.
The study found London to be the most expensive city for a night out (shock), with the average pint costing almost £7 and the average hotel costing £209. And look, it’s really not in our nature to have something negative to say about our beloved capital, but when the cost of a night out begins to resemble that of a small mortgage, we don’t really have a leg to stand on.
The report said: “Despite the large plethora of pubs, clubs and bars across the city, [London] gained its bottom place due to its expensive costs, highlighting the grave effect of the cost-of-living crisis on the country’s nightlife economy.”
Bristol came in at second to last place, with a party score of 6.88, and Belfast narrowly missed out on being in the bottom two, with a score of 6.94. On a slightly brighter note, the sunny(ish) seaside city of Brighton was hailed the best night out in the UK, boasting an impressive perfect score of 10 out of 10.
Praised for its huge variety of bars and nightclubs, and its relatively reasonable average pint cost, Brighton has nabbed the nightlife crown. And although we still think London reigns supreme with its historic pubs, iconic music venues, and abundance of bars and clubs; it’s pretty darn handy that Brighton is so easy to get to from the capital, hey?
