You could head down under for just £10 this year. And yes, by down under we do mean Australia; yes, by £10 we mean ten pounds sterling; and yes, you did read all that right the first time.
Australia have recently reopened their borders to travellers after they were shut during the earlier stages of the global pandemic, and a selection of flights to and from Adelaide are being slashed in a bid to boost tourism. The scheme harks back to the mass migration “10 pound poms” in 1945.
If you’re a young adult with the means to fly from London Heathrow, Dublin, Edinburgh or Manchester airports you could be in luck. In May, Qatar Airways will offer 200 return flights to Adelaide, so you’ll need to be quick if you want to snap up this bargain to end all bargains.
Travellers must be aged between 18 and 30 in the UK (18-35 in Ireland), and have proof of a working holiday visa – or proof that you have an application currently being processed. Pre-registering with Trailfinders before the tickets are released is also a requirement.
You’ll also need to buy a holiday starter pack with Trailfinders from £162, which gets you a three-night hostel stay, vouchers and help to set up a bank account and find a job with your visa. All travellers must be able to fly to Australia before September 30, 2022.
South Australian Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said: “South Australia is welcoming the return of working holidaymakers – it’s a real win-win for young people eager to travel and work abroad, and for our local tourism industry.
“Our tourism operators have missed having international visitors on their tours and experiences and booking up accommodation, and they’ve also missed the backpacker workforce and the vibrancy they bring.
“These backpackers foster a love for our state and our country which often inspires them to return later in life. Whether it’s in our bars, restaurants, wineries and hotels, or on our outback stations and farms, there are so many ways that British and Irish citizens can work in Adelaide and in regional South Australia, helping to not only fill roles but provide an economic and cultural exchange benefit which advantages both sides of the globe.”
If you make it, be sure to say hi to our good friends at Secret Adelaide! 👋
