Every year, the holiday season sees London overtaken with all manner of wonderful Christmas displays. Christmas lights twinkle merrily on high and Christmas markets start slinging mulled wine left and right. (I’ll take two!) There are also all sorts of charming Christmas trees that pop up with hugely varied decorations and themes. But only one can lay claim to being the city’s tallest Christmas tree – and it’s just been unveiled in East London.
Over in Bishopsgate Square, right outside the Pan Pacific London, an immense Christmas tree has been unveiled. Lit up with charming Christmas decorations, the tree stands a whopping 67 feet tall. That’s just under 20.5 metres! Compare that to Covent Garden’s impressive specimen, which measures in at a paltry 55 feet.
The tree has landed in the London square courtesy of a partnership between Pan Pacific London hotel and the Eastern City Business Improvement District. And naturally, a tree of this stature requires a hefty number of ornaments to decorate it. In fact, it’s covered in a mind-boggling 65,000 sparkling lights and over 800 red and gold baubles.
The tallest Christmas tree?
It’s worth pointing out, that it might have some competition for the tallest Christmas tree title. Each year, Norway gifts London a special tree as thanks for helping them out in World War II, which goes on display in Trafalgar Square. The tree is usually around 20 metres tall – which is just over 65 feet. That’s not too far off this tree’s height, at 67 feet…
If Norway sends us a particularly impressive Norwegian Spruce this year, it could well take the crown for London’s tallest Christmas tree! Only time will tell, so keep your eyes peeled on Trafalgar Square. The square’s Christmas decorations are set to be illuminated on December 5, so you may get a look at the tree in the day or two before then!
Until then, we’ll be heading down to Bishopsgate Plaza to marvel at the sheer stature of the Pan Pacific London’s Christmas tree.
📍Find the impressive Christmas tree at Bishopsgate Plaza, outside Pan Pacific London, 80 Houndsditch, EC3A 7AB. The nearest station is Liverpool Street.
🕰️ The tree will be on display until January 5, 2025.
