Our city’s love affair with books and all things word-y is no secret. We’ve got a wealth of literary pedigree, and London is home to some pretty impressive places to buy and browse books, or immerse yourself in the written word. Naturally, that means we’ve got some truly stunning libraries boasting enormous bookshelves filled with centuries worth of writing. But then, on the very other end of the scale, over in Lewisham, you’ll also find London’s very smallest library. And we have to say – it’s SO CUTE!
Now, when we say ‘small library’, you probably think of those mini-public-library boxes that can be found on residential streets around London. These offer Londoners the chance to take a book to enjoy or leave one for the next passer-by to discover. But arguably, these mini boxes of books aren’t really libraries… After a point, things get too small to stand up to the word’s meaning. I mean – you can’t even go inside them!

The ‘smallest library’ we’re talking about hosts a fair few more titles on its shelves. And you can escape from the elements and browse some books while hiding from the rain. That is, after all, half the job of a library, right?
Where is London’s smallest library?
Over in Lewisham, hidden away on a quiet street corner, you’ll find London’s smallest library tucked away inside a classic London phone box. And inside a surprisingly impressive world of literary delights awaits…
More specifically, you’ll find the ‘Lewisham Micro Library’ at the corner of Lewisham Way and Tyrwhitt Road. It’s just a short walk away from St John’s station. Look for it surrounded by stunning blooms in the warmer months, making for a picturesque scene.

Top tip: make sure to look up and read the inscription on the ceiling when you visit!
How did a library end up in a phone box?
Back in 2013, architect Sebastian Handley undertook the task of transforming the Lewisham phone box into a tiny book depository. He gutted the box and installed eight shelves to transform it into a delightful literary resource for the community.
Handley was granted permission through BT’s Adopt A Kiosk scheme and, despite fears of vandalism and theft, it’s still going strong today over 10 years later.
