One of the best things about London is that you can experience every cuisine from around the world without ever having to leave the city. Certain areas are even known for one cuisine in particular, whether it’s Brick Lane for its curries or Bute Street in South Kensington, known as “Little Paris” thanks to its French bakeries and vintage cinema.
Well, we’ve got another one of these special enclaves to add to your list: Haringay Green Lanes in the borough of Haringey (yes, two different spellings for the borough and area within it), which has become known as “Little Istanbul.”

North London’s Turkish community has made this road, which happens to be one of the longest in London, a vibrant hub for Turkish cuisine, shops and culture.
The street is lined with Turkish restaurants serving traditional dishes, including the quintessential kebab. Most are family-run joints, with highlights including Hala, whose name literally translates to ‘Aunt’ in Turkish and Gökyüzü, which has six locations and promises vibrant spices and succulent meats that define authentic Turkish dishes.
Kofteci Metin is a restaurant dedicated entirely to melt-in-your-mouth meatballs, all seasoned with their secret blend of spices. Taking a stroll down Green Lanes, you won’t be stuck for choice, that’s for sure.
There are also bakeries serving traditional baklava, a sweet dessert pastry, and coffee dotted throughout the area, including Yasar Halim, founded in 1981. Beyond the culinary selection, you’ll also find Turkish barbers, jewellers and other local businesses.
Getting there
Turnpike Lane tube station sits at one end of the long road, and Harringay Green Lanes Overground Station sits at the other near the Finsbury Park end, so it’s served well by public transport.
