LEGO-lovers of the capital city, this one’s for you. The LEGO Group have just announced their Superpower Academy, which will open in Shoreditch on World Play Day (October 12), for a week of helping families rediscover the superpower of play.
This one-of-a-kind, immersive experience will form part of the ‘Play Is Your Superpower’ campaign, and will be dedicated to the joy and benefits of play. The academy aims to inspire families to reprioritise play, and make their days a bit more playful.
The Superpower Academy will feature a range of exciting escape room-style activities, encouraging families to unite their superpowers to complete the missions. Each of the rooms will host a different challenge, set by the Professor of Play. The challenges will test the players’ creativity, problem-solving, communication and resilience. Once families have unleashed their superpowers, they will graduate as fully-qualified members of the LEGO Group’s Play Squad, taking home a LEGO graduation gift to commemorate the day.
Local artist and limerick aficionado, Angry Dave, has created a series of bespoke riddles that set each mission. Families will have to solve them in order to unlock new rooms. Angry Dave has also created a mural that will welcome players into the Superpower Academy. Guests and passers-by will be invited to design their own tile to add to the mural, leaving their own personal LEGO mark on the streets of Shoreditch.
Play is a fundamental part of a child’s growth. It helps them to develop significant skills and ‘superpowers’ that will benefit them now and in the future. Studies show that over half of children in the UK spend less than seven hours a week playing. According to 95% of parents, play makes the whole family happier by building bonds and improving wellbeing. The LEGO Superpower Academy hopes to help families re-immerse themselves in the true joy of play.
Do you know what? I was really hoping to end on a really funny LEGO joke, but it’s just taking me ages to put it together. See what I did there?
The Superpower Academy is free to attend but tickets must be booked in advance. You can book your tickets here.
The Superpower Academy will be open from October 12 – October 18 (9am-6.45pm).
