Perhaps one of the most eccentric, but certainly the cutest, upcoming new openings in Soho is the opening of jazz-loving feline’s very own jazz club. Yes, you heard correctly, a cat-run jazz club is opening its doors right on Greek Street.
Alfie, a jazz cat who is an actual jazz cat, has become somewhat of a celebrity on the jazz scene having had some encounters with some big names including Sir Michael Palin, Eddie Izzard, and Emma Thompson at The Piano Bar Soho. The launch of his venue, Alfie’s Private Members Jazz Club, will be Alfie’s turn to take to his own spotlight.
Alfie’s Jazz Club is connected to the artsy Union Club and is brought to you by the producers at Soho Live Studios who run a celebrated label and the Soho Jazz Festival. A show-stopping performance last night by Jazz FM’s Vocalist of the Year, Cherise, with a take on the club’s title track “Alfie” ushered in the grand opening of the club, with many more unforgettable melodies and state-of-the-art sound by Roland to come.
George Hudson, Soho’s impresario and Alfie’s human, says, “Alfie’s not just any cat; he’s embraced the Soho culture and whenever any of our stars pop by to film or record he can’t help but get involved. You can check out some encounters on his Instagram @sohojazzcat when Stephen Fry was in, he fully understood it was about time he had his own bar! This new club is his legacy, a place where the past and present of jazz collide, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve got lined up.”
Programme highlights feature the weekly Alfie’s Jazz Jam, a platform for emerging talents and established stars, and the Night Train, an evening affair of cocktails and music every weekend. The venue itself is a nod to Soho’s swinging sixties, mixes retro fashion with modern art, currently featuring works by David Ferry. It’s not just a club; it’s a time machine with a martini in hand.
The box office is now open for nightly music, along with an invitation to join the club if wanted to return for more. Membership is offered at just £35 a year.
