Japan is a country that’s steeped in tradition; bursting at the seams with delicious food, incredible art, and rich culture. But, as you may have already noticed, it’s also a country that’s pretty far away from London. And if – like me – your bank balance and annual leave allowance don’t quite align with your urge to hop on a long-haul flight to the Land of the Rising Sun, I come bearing some information that you may well want to hear.
The UK’s largest annual celebration of Japanese food and culture will return to London in October, bringing the sights, sounds, tastes, and traditions of Japan straight to the streets of London. Japan Matsuri festival will land in Trafalgar Square on October 4, filling it to the brim with sizzling street food and a whole host of traditional Japanese entertainment. Oh, and the very best part, I hear you ask? It’s completely free to attend.
Japan Matsuri Festival
Having attracted a rather sizeable (and ever-so loyal) fanbase here in London over the past 17 years or so, the lovely lot over at Japan Matsuri are no strangers to shining a light on the very best of what Japan has to offer. Whilst the 2026 programme of events is yet to be announced, if previous years are anything to go by, visitors can expect a jam-packed entertainment schedule. The event kicks off at 10am (usually with an impressive opening ceremony) and after that, festival-goers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see, do, eat, and drink.
The live entertainment offering often involves an abundance of both traditional and more contemporary performances. Firm festival favourites and up-and-coming talent will take to the stage throughout the day. And visitors can expect to be entertained by everything from music, movement, and martial arts to comedy, calligraphy, and cosplay.
Whilst Japan Matsuri is undeniably a feast for the eyes and ears, the tummies are also extremely well catered for. Attendees will be able to stuff their faces with all manner of authentic Japanese cuisine. I’d be here all evening if I were to attempt to name each and every delicious delicacies which has been up for grabs in previous years – but just know that it’ll all maki your mouth water.
There’s usually plenty of stalls and market traders dotted around Trafalgar Square, too – so visitors will have the chance to snap up some lovely keepsakes to take home with them. It sounds like a pretty darn perfect way to spend the day, if you ask me.
