The Granary Square steps are back in business, with some delicious new arrivals.
Many things herald the coming of summer, but few appear so surreptitiously as the return of the Granary Square steps, the Kings Cross hangout beloved by office workers and sunseekers alike. The suntrap, which overlooks a serene stretch of Regent’s Canal, is usually kitted out in fake grass and colourful touches, and 2020 is no different. From today, the steps are back in business for canalside sunbathing and pint-sipping, with the added bonus of a whimsical art installation.
It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what makes the Granary Square steps such a hit each year. Some potent combination of sunshine, water, views, and their proximity to both the abundant office space of Kings Cross, and the twin shopping delights of Coal Drops Yard and Canopy Market, makes it a beloved summer hangout. Whilst you won’t see the lunchtime rush in full force this year, the steps will no doubt draw the crowds with the arrival of the Lollypop Lounge – a series of ice lollies sculptures slowly melting into the grass.
What is often the worst fate of the ice lolly has here been transformed into a source of whimsy, as the twelve giant ice lollies remind us that summer is an all-too-fleeting gift. Plus, they’ll look just peachy on the ‘gram. Also in place at the Lollypop Lounge are a series of scattered stripy sun loungers, all of which have been carefully positioned in order to maintain social distancing. Best of all, it’s entirely free to kick back amongst the lollies and top up your tan!
The art installation is just one part of The Great Outdoors, a series of free outdoor experiences that aim to keep spirits high during the remainder of the summer. Ranging from public art installation such as these, to al fresco fitness classes, traffic-free shopping, and family-friendly fun, the scheme will run throughout July and August in the green and open spaces of Kings Cross. Isn’t life sweet?
