We’ll have: a chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey! It’s been almost five years since the Christmas special of Gavin and Stacey aired, but luckily for fans it’s not the last episode we’ve seen from the characters… It has now been confirmed by the writers of the much-loved TV programme that it will be returning to our screens once again this festive season to grace us with a final episode.
After much speculation as to whether the series would return, James Corden, co-writer of Gavin and Stacey and actor who plays Smithy in the series, confirmed the news this morning (May 3), saying: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James ❤️”
Gavin and Stacey is written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa in the series, and follows the lives of two families: one in Billericay, Essex; one in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan in Wales. It can’t be Gavin and Stacey without Gavin and Stacey so we expect actors Matthew Horne and Joanna Page to return to their starring roles, as well as James Corden, Ruth Jones alongside Alison Steadman as Pam, Larry Lamb as Mick, Melanie Walters as Gwen and Rob Brydon as Bryn.
Set to air on Christmas Day on BBC One, details of the last episode remain under wraps including whether the story will continue from where the last episode back in 2019 left off. Will we ever find out what happened on that fishing trip?
The Christmas special ended on a cliffhanger with Nessa professing her love to Smithy and getting down on one knee to propose to him. Hopefully, this last episode will give us the answers we so desperately need.
The Gavin and Stacey series began back in 2007, with three series running until 2010, followed by the Christmas special in 2019. The last episode of Gavin and Stacey by Baby Cow Productions will air on Christmas Day (December 25) on BBC One and iPlayer.
