If you’re bonkers for books and literature, then keep on scrolling, because Hackney is all set to be London’s literary hotspot all weekend long. The Free Books Campaign’s Free Books Festival will be taking over BSix Sixth Form College from July 19-21, with an overarching mission to make literature accessible to everyone, providing free books to those who might not otherwise afford them with a focus on literature written by authors of colour.
This year’s festival is their third iteration and promises to be the biggest yet. It boasts an eclectic lineup of events that celebrate storytelling in all its forms–from literature to gaming, visual arts to music, and beyond.
You can expect insightful talks and debates, film screenings, workshops, DJ sets, plus so much more. There will be something for everyone, so make sure to browse through their jam-packed lineup to see if anything tickles your fancy!
Notable attendees include musician Sampha and the renowned poet/film-maker Caleb Femi, both of which are headlining with a fantastic conversation on their lives and work. Also, authors Depo Adeola and Yomi Sode will be participating in discussions and workshops as a part of a new collaboration with Tate Publishing, with the exciting Tate Story Space making an appearance at the festival for some well-rounded family fun.
The event has been curated by founder Sofia Akel, as well as the many Festival patrons who work directly with the Free Books Campaign. Its unique and inspiring programming has been created with accessibility and inclusivity at its core, highlighting the festival’s community-driven ethos.
Sofia Akel, Founder of the Free Books Campaign and Free Books Festival says: “This year’s festival is a true testament to the power of community, everyone involved is volunteering their time, resources and networks to make this the biggest festival to date.”
