It’s great living in London and all, but given a chance every summer, most of us are looking at flights to sit on the sand anywhere but the United Kingdom. Not that we don’t have any love for the beaches here (when the weather behaves itself), but the sun-kisses spaces abroad seem a little… well… better?
Put it this way: there are things that the UK would rank highly for, but the beaches aren’t what springs to mind. Having said this, the Telegraph has carried out a deep dive into the world’s glorious golden sands and declared that four of the best beaches in the world are right here in Britain.
In their list of the best 50 beaches in the world, the mighty four UK spots were chosen. Dungeness Beach in Kent was chosen among the best, highlighted in the ‘Best for Wildlife’ category, sitting comfortably around Wharariki in New Zealand and Nihiwatu in Indonesia. It was picked out for its magic in both autumn and winter, and its famed lighthouses and abandoned boats.
Also making the list was Holkham in Norfolk, which sits in the ‘Best for Views’ category and is nestled among Second Beach in Washington, USA and Maya Bay in Thailand in the rankings. It’s highlighted not only for being Gwyneth Paltrow’s walkway in Shakespeare in Love, but also for its stunning sand dunes and swathes of golden beauty. Joining Holkham in the same category was Three Cliffs Bay in Gower, Wales, which was praised for a ‘sweep of blonde sand’, the trio of cliffs, and views of Pennard Castle.
Porthcurno Beach in Cornwall also made the cut, slotting into the ‘Best for Families’ placings with the company of Pacific Beach in California and Zlatni Rat in Croatia. Recommended for a walk along the promenade and its pleasant mix of pebbles, places to eat, and snorkelling opportunities.
