Fitz’s Bar is a place to rock your finery, that’s for sure.
Ok, so no one is going to say London is short of places to drink fancy cocktails. But we’re sure as hell not going to complain when we get another one. Recently opened on the doorstep of Russell Square is Fitz’s Bar, an elegant new watering hole with a serious pedigree behind it. For one thing, the team running it have been sourced from legendary Soho bar Milk & Honey and Shoreditch groundbreaker Callooh Callay. But also, the place is fancy AF. Just look at it!
Fitz’s Bar makes its home in the stylish surroundings of The Principal hotel, a Victorian vision on the edge of Russell Square. It’s an homage to Charles Fitzroy Doll, who built said hotel, and the bar has gone all in on flamboyance. Dark wood, Art Deco fixtures, and Jazz Age art from John Held Jr are splashed all over the space, whilst a glitter ball descends from the silk ceiling. Yup, this is a seriously suave place to sip your Manhattan.
Maybe expand your taste a bit further than that, though, because Fitz’s Bar sports a pretty inventive cocktail menu. The Vesca Negroni, for instance, is flavoured with woodland strawberry, aloe, and coconut. Meanwhile, I’m practically salivating at the thought of a Four Queens – a concoction of Irish whiskey, wildflower & heather honey, mint, fennel, and lemon that would be perfect right about now.
In a nice touch, many of the cocktails are inspired by colourful characters who’ve lived in Bloomsbury, including Noor Inayat Khan, the ‘spy princess’ who would become Britain’s first Muslim war heroine. Aside from the drinks, you’ll be well catered for with bar snacks such as bone marrow croquettes, and French toast. Fancy indeed. Throw on your gladrags, order a drink, and languish on the sofas, because Fitz’s Bar is positively Gatsbyesque, dahling.
