Should you be ambling around Broadway Market on Saturday (September 23) and find yourself with a hankering for some pie and mash made by those with as much experience as you could ask for then… it’s good news for you. But just for that day and that day only.
F Cooke is a household name in the London pie and mash game, but it was sadly forced to close its Broadway Market location in 2019. It traded for the best part of 120 years, but now the site is used by a Cubitts glasses store, which took over earlier this year.
However, on September 23, the pie and mash legends will be rolling back into the doors of its old site, after being invited by Cubitts to serve up their divine creations for one more day. You’ll be able to tuck into either their traditional beef mince pie or a vegetarian soya mince option, so the whole crew can get fed with slatherings of the iconic dish, and maybe even have room for seconds or a helping of jellied eels.
Anyone who has felt Broadway Market lost a key part of its history and misses F Cooke, or just fancies some damn good pie and mash with liquor and jellied eels is invited to head down between the hours of 11am – 5pm. A hearty feed is promised.
F Cooke are even planning to serve the steaming plates out of their old hatch; just like old times. The Grade II-listed building still bears the pie shop to mark its place in London’s history, after all. You can still find F Cooke in Chelmsford, Essex, but catching them for a day in the market once again is sure to be pretty special.
Anyone hoping to take advantage of the legendary F Cooke pie and mash pop-up can also reserve a free spot at Broadway Market here. The pop-up takes place on Saturday, September 23 from 11am – 5pm at Cubitts Broadway Market, 9 Broadway Market, E8 4PH.
