The Eurovision Song Contest was due to be held in Rotterdam on May 16.
For 63 years viewers across Europe have tuned in to watch The Eurovision Song Contest but this year we will be without it. This year, the UK was expecting to be represented by James Newman, in the hopes that his song ‘My Last Breath’ would be a hit. The UK came last in the competition last year so, presumably, a lot of work had gone into this year’s submission.
However, don’t despair because the competition will still happen — we’ll just have to wait a while. Although arguably re-scheduling an annual competition to next year’s slot is more of a cancellation than a postponement, it will still be held in Rotterdam. Eurovision has never been cancelled in all of the time that it has existed, so this is pretty unprecedented.
This latest cancellation comes as the most recent news in an ongoing stream of updates, telling of cancelled TV shows and cancelled festivals. The prevention of the spread of COVID-19 has been cited as the reason for all of these cancellations thus far.
