We’re all in the game of routing for the outsiders, and Tim Burton created one of those very charming weirdos with the character of Edward Scissorhands.
The enigmatic director created the tale of one boy who was made by a rather eccentric inventor, but wasn’t quite finished, and was left with scissors in the place of his hands. Quite the tricky scenario to navigate in the suburban America landscape.
Matthew Bourne has brought this tale to the theatre, and given it an even more weird and wonderful twist, directing and choreographing Edward Scissorhands. First kicking off in 2005, the Edward Scissorhands theatre adaptation has toured the world, making appearances in Japan, Korea, Australia and many more countries.
Last time the UK caught a glimpse of the loveable hairdresser, though, was almost a decade ago in 2014 — now, the tale returns to the stage across Britain for a four-month period later this year.
Key dates for Londoners to note down for the production of Edward Scissorhands at the Sadler’s Wells theatre in London is December 5, 2023 – January 20, 24. Turkey won’t be all that’s cut this Christmas, that one’s clear… right Ed?
Touring of Edward Scissorhands kicks off at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth on November 25, before its initial run ends at the Birmingham Hippodrome on February 6-10, 2024. There are also further dates expected to be announced that stretch into May 2024, so watch out for those.
Matthew Bourne’s crowning moment was perhaps his take on Swan Lake, which once-upon-a-time was the longest-running ballet at both the West End and Broadway. Bourne is also known for his shows including The Nutcracker!, Sleeping Beauty, and many more.
Those who go and check out the production will be treated to beautiful costumes and set designs by Les Brotherston, sound design by Paul Groothuis and a light show by Howard Harrison. You’ll also hear fresh sounds and musical arrangements by Terry Davies, which is based on the score dreamed up by Danny Elfman in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands.
There’s no word on the cast just yet, but announcement is expected soon.
