We’re not going to lie – we like to think that we do pretty good food in London. We’ve got incredible restaurants, fantastic food markets, and even all kind of late-night food offerings. But that doesn’t mean we’re immune to food-based FOMO as we gaze across the land, and the ocean, to the food in other cities and countries. But, at least one of those international cravings will finally land in London, as Döner Shack finally opens a London venue.
That’s right, the Turkish-German fusion hit ‘kebap’ vendor will finally be serving up their luxe döner offerings for hungry Londoners. They’re opening up a location on Baker Street, (perfectly situated for pre- and post-night out cravings) on March 27. They’re coming straight “From Berlin With Love” to share their love of great döner. And it’s just the first of the brand’s 10 planned new openings for the year!
What to expect at Döner Shack
The German fast-casual chain is hoping to change the UK perception of kebabs. Instead of being a grease-laden affair strictly relegated to late night chowing sessions, Döner Shack uses only the freshest ingredients, from their lean meats to their freshly baked breads and homemade sauces. They also offer vegan and gluten-free options, and all of their meat is certified halal to boot!
The restaurant itself will be spread across two floors, with robotic kebab cutters and travelators that bring the food to customers. It’s a whole new experience from the brand, but one rooted in the same delicious food.
They’ll be serving up multiple flavours of milkshakes alongside a menu of over 15 signature dishes that cover a wide range of döner and shawarma options, with freshly baked traditional Turkish breads, and a choice of home-made signature sauces and salads. And, yes, don’t worry, they’ll also have their supremely popular boneless chicken schnitzel bites.
Kebap? Do you mean kebab?
Nope! The kebap is a uniquely Turkish-German fusion invention. Back in 1972, Turkish worker Mr Kadir Nurman invented the Döner Kebap for Berliners on the move. Nurman set up a stall in West Berlin, selling grilled meats with salad in a flatbread, called them kebaps, and the idea took off.
Kebaps became essentially the national dish of Germany, outselling their other street food wares 3-to-1. Now, over 40,000 outlets across Germany sell the dish, with over 1,000 in Berlin alone!
