Since the frenzy of excitement surrounding Hamilton has – eventually – died down, we haven’t had too upcoming musicals to really get excited about. That changed in October, as news reached us that Dear Evan Hansen, the Tony-award winning show that’s been charming New York for two years, will have a West End run in 2019. The show is set to reach London in October, and tickets have just gone on sale.
Whilst the musical may not be massively well-known over here, it’s a Big Deal for musical nerds (like me!). Dear Evan Hansen was a Broadway smash when it debuted in 2016, and since then has scooped awards, accolades, and adoration. It picked up a whopping six Tony Awards back in 2017, including a Best Actor award for original lead Ben Platt (best known for Pitch Perfect). Like Hamilton before it, it seemed only a matter of time before the production made the hop across the pond, and that time has finally come.
The show will settle into the Noel Coward Theatre from October 27th (for previews), with the official opening date being November 19th. Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of Evan Hansen, an anxious high-schooler catapulted into the limelight when a lie gets out of control. American audiences have strongly identified with the themes of mental health, social anxiety, and suicide the musical raises, making it a firm fan favourite. And whilst we’ve spent months saying You Will Be Found to tickets, there’s no need to anymore – you’ll find them here.
