Regardless of whether you’re Doctor Who-obsessed, are simply a casual fan of the iconic British show, or have never seen an episode, you’re likely familiar with David Tennant’s tenure as The Doctor in the show. But because one iconic show isn’t enough for the award-winning actor, he’s also starred in everything from Broadchurch to Jessica Jones, Good Omens, Harry Potter, and much more. And soon, you’ll be able to get up close and personal (well, okay, not too close) as he makes his Almeida Theatre debut next year.
The Almeida Theatre recently announced details of its first season with multi-Olivier Award winner Dominic Cooke as Artistic Director. The new season will feature “four world premieres, ambitious revivals and a landmark co-production”. And eagle-eyed theatre fans will have spotted that the announcement also includes a reference to David Tennant leading a new production of John Osborne’s The Entertainer.
David Tennant at the Almeida Theatre
This will be David Tennant’s first production at the Almeida Theatre. However, it’s hardly his first time treading the boards in London. Tennant is particularly renowned for his Shakespearean roles and has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company since the 1990s. Most recently, he was a performer in White Rabbit Red Rabbit at the Duchess Theatre.

The Almeida Theatre’s new production of The Entertainer will be directed by Artistic Director Dominic Cooke. The play was first produced back in 1957, following the success of John Osborne’s debut play, Look Back in Anger.
The Entertainer centres around a failing music-hall performer, and spoke to the national mood at the time. It features ‘an angry middle-aged man’ struggling with a changing world. Laurence Olivier starred in the first production, and the subsequent film adaptation.
