It’s hard to think of many more iconic moments in cinema over the last decade than Daniel Kaluuya’s descent into the sunken place during Jordan Peele’s Get Out [2017] – save for several other scenes in the very same film!
And it’s clear that many are in agreement, with a statue of that very movement being made into a statue, which will be unveiled on Leicester Square as a dazzling new addition to the ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail. He joins the trail after topping a poll of 5,000 film fans joined a poll with Show Film First to determine who of the current generation of British film stars should be honoured as part of the trail.
Scenes In The Square
Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out will be cast in bronze to join the nine other pieces around Leicester Square that make up the star-studded trail. Elsewhere on the square, you can currently check out the nine other statues, which are scenes of/from: Mary Poppins, Harry Potter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Singin’ In The Rain, Mr. Bean, Game Of Thrones, Laurel & Hardy, Bugs Bunny, and Paddington. Other temporary statues have also included Indiana Jones cracking his whip and Game of Thrones number.
Speaking on the news, Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive for Heart of London Business Alliance, said: “We are excited to welcome Daniel Kaluuya and Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ to our Scenes in the Square line-up as a celebration of a modern cinematic success and homegrown British talent. It points to a bright future for our trail, with Kaluuya as a chosen symbol of the future of entertainment, and it is a pleasure to be able to spotlight such a pioneering film.”
Daniel Kaluuya has played multiple starring roles on British television shows, with performances in Skins, Doctor Who, and Black Mirror, before taking Hollywood by storm in 2017 following the release of Get Out and his portrayal of lead character Chris Washington. He has since started in roles including Queen and Slim [2019], Judas and the Black Messiah [2021] and a subsequent Jordan Peele picture, Nope [2017].
The statue of Daniel Kaluya in ‘Get Out’ will arrive on Leicester Square in October as part of Scenes in the Square.
