Though we’re advised to keep warm and cosy at this time of year, there are some occasions where that can be put aside in the name of charity (and a slight bit of madness) and you can plunge into an icy body of water for a good cause.
The Crisis Icebreaker is back, and they’ll be inviting the public to take the dive into their unheated waters on December 7 in the name of raising money for the national charity for those experiencing homelessness. Anyone who loves a cold water swim (or doesn’t) is welcome to take part, with a £15 registration fee required with the aim of raising £150.
You don’t have to wear fancy dress at the Crisis Icebreaker, but you might as well look the part to distract from all the shivering going on when you get out of the lido. There will be a competition judged by the Lido Ladies as to who have the best costumes at the Crisis Icebreaker.
Once you’re out of the water and dried off with a hot drink in tow, you can stick around for further fundraising which includes an advent calendar from the festive Liberty Christmas store. You’ll also be able to give to Crisis at their donation point, which accepts any clothes you don’t need anymore to go to those who need them over the winter period.
At the end of the event, everyone taking part will receive a Crisis swimming hat, which you’ll no doubt be able to don proudly at the next Crisis Icebreaker events, which take place early next year at Parliament Hill Lido (January 18) and Tooting Bec Lido (January 25).
The Crisis Icebreaker is taking place at Brockwell Lido, Brockwell Park, Dulwich Road, SE24 0PA (nearest stations are Herne Hill and Brixton) on December 7, 2024. You can find out more and apply here.
