We’re still about five months away from truly ideal conditions for a front crawl with a breeze for company, but you can now tackle the icy waer from London, if you’re so inclined.
Brockwell Park Lido is your arena and you can glide across it, whatever the weather, all throughout this month for the price of £1 a pop. Plus, it’s all for a great cause – proceeds go towards charity Warm Spaces (which, at face value, you won’t be feeling very connected while you’re in the water) signposts those in need of somewhere heated in the midst of a cost-of-living and climate crisis.
The Brockwell Park Lido ‘Sub-10 Club’
Dips for a quid occur between 10am-12pm every day from January 1-31, and is part of the Sub-10 Club community group. In the winter, the water inevitably plummets below 10 degrees, which obviously makes it the perfect time to look cool and dive right in.
Of course, the most important reason to this here is to donate to a charity that helps those who need it, but cold water swimming has been championed for personal benefits too. Many believers in the art wax lyrical about how the practice can help many by “alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and depression, to increasing libido and reducing stress”. Before and after your dip, you can listen to trained cold-water immersion experts to ensure you have captured the essence of all the benefits the activity has to offer.
You may not have anticipated starting it this quickly, but if your New Year’s resolution was to swim outdoors more often, then here’s a cheap way you can do just that while giving to a good cause. Just remember to pack your thickest towel for when you clamber out of the pool.
