Clueless is the next classic comedy to receive the musical treatment, as it’s just been announced that the 1995 Amy Heckerling film is hitting London’s West End next year.
Handily coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the film’s release, Clueless: The Musical will hit the Trafalgar Theatre from February 15, and feature songs written by none other than KT Tunstall.
Amy Heckerling, the original writer-director of the picture has also adapted Clueless for the stage, and the score by KT Tunstall is completely new. The Scottish musician took to the stage to perform versions of a number of songs, which included a rendition of Human Barbies written in the style of Green Day.
Speaking on the news, KT Tunstall said: “I want you to feel like you’re at a gig with all of your favourite 90s artists playing in one show. And not just have a theatre experience but a concert experience [as the band] jump from one genre to the next.”
The film’s original soundtrack includes numbers from Radiohead, the Beastie Boys, Counting Crows, Supergrass and more, and the musical will undoubtedly capture this dose of the ’90s, 30 years on.
While we are yet to hear news on casting, Rachel Kavanaugh will be on directing duty, and Glenn Slater, who also wrote songs for adaptations of The Little Mermaid and Sister Act, will be at the helm for lyrics.
Clueless is a 1995 spin-off of Jane Austen’s classic 1815 novel, Emma, and the musical will also be set in the 90s and take viewers on a trip to Beverly Hills High.
Clueless: The Musical will begin at the Trafalgar Theatre, 14 Whitehall, SW1A 2DY (nearest stations are Charing Cross and Embankment) from February 15, 2025.
