Just a 45-minute train ride from London Bridge to Edenbridge Town or a scenic 40-mile drive through Kent’s rolling countryside – this Tudor gem, once Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, transforms into the Land of Oz for the festive season. Offering families and couples a magical festive escape with illuminated trails, historic interiors and nostalgic rides – all reachable without overnight stays, making the perfect enchanting escape from London.
Christmas at Hever Castle with a Land of Oz theme and trail
For 2025, Hever’s Christmas theme is The Wizard of Oz, inviting visitors to “follow the yellow brick road” through the grounds. The journey starts in a recreation of Dorothy’s Kansas farmhouse before leading you past Munchkinland, fields of glowing poppies and on to a vividly lit Emerald City projected onto the castle itself at dusk.
Running from November 21 2025 to January 2 2026, the experience blends storybook magic, heritage charm and family-friendly attractions across the day and into the evening, with optional grotto visits for children.
Along the Wizard of Oz trail, guests encounter character installations of the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, plus playful touches such as flying monkeys hidden among Christmas trees. Costumed characters appear in the gardens on selected dates, offering opportunities for photos and in-the-moment interactions.
Daytime vs twilight visits to Hever Castle’s Christmas celebrations

Hever splits the experience into Daytime and Twilight tickets, each offering a different atmosphere. Daytime visits run in 15-minute entry slots up to mid-afternoon, giving you time to explore the gardens, Oz trail, play areas and castle interiors in natural light.
Twilight tickets start from 4pm, when the lights switch on and the castle, lake and grounds are washed in colour, with interactive displays, music and illuminated trees creating a more dramatic, immersive feel. Daytime visitors can stay into the first part of the twilight period, but must leave by the earlier “day” exit time specified for their date.
Inside Hever Castle at Christmas

Inside Hever Castle, rooms are dressed for a traditional Christmas, with roaring log fires, twinkling trees and Tudor-inspired decorations. The Boleyn Apartment receives a special “Tudor Christmas” treatment, layering historical detail onto the seasonal styling.
Hints of the Land of Oz thread through the interiors, tying the castle décor back to the outdoor trail without overwhelming the building’s period character. During the Christmas season audio guides are paused to keep visitor flow moving and let the visuals take centre stage.
Father Christmas and fairground rides at Hever Castle

An optional grotto experience lets families visit Father Christmas in a cosy log cabin reached via a tree-lined path, post office and workshop filled with elves. Pre-booking is essential, with timed grotto slots that sit later than your grounds entry time, and last admission on Christmas Eve in mid-afternoon.
Outside on the castle forecourt, nostalgic fairground rides such as Gallopers, Big Wheel and a vintage Octopus ride run daily when the event is open, on a pay-per-ride token system. The Octopus, new for 2025, is a gentle children’s ride with small cars rising and falling on arm-like spokes, designed to be more charming than hair-raising.
Christmas at Hever includes relaxed festive shopping in the on-site gift shops, which stock seasonal decorations, gifts and souvenirs themed around the castle and Christmas. Cafés and kiosks across the estate serve hot drinks and winter warmers, and there is limited space for picnics if you prefer to bring your own.
On selected dates you can also book festive lunches at the Waterside Bar, Restaurant & Terrace at the nearby Hever Golf & Wellbeing, about a mile from the main entrance. Additional paid extras such as boat trips on the Lady Astor run on certain afternoons, adding another vantage point on the illuminated grounds.
The event operates with strictly timed entry and limited capacity, and visitors are strongly advised to pre-book online, including annual members, as walk-up tickets are not guaranteed. You can find more information here.
